Whiplash injury occurs when the body, head, neck, spine, react with hyperextension or hyperflexion during decelerating or accelerating force resulting from rear impact.
Outcome studies suggest that from 12% to 86% of whiplash victims will continue to be symptomatic on a permanent basis after their injury, rear impact having the worse prognosis.
Symptoms following whiplash, in order of prevalence include:
- Neck pain
- Headache-May be part of Postconcussion Syndrome
- Upper back pain
- Lower back pain
- Numbness and tingling
- Arm/Leg pain or weakness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Dizziness of light-headed
- Facial pain or jaw pain
- Ringing in the ears or loss of hearing
- Blurred vision
- Hoarseness
On average about 30-50% of patients in these rear impact studies had not recovered completely at follow-up with about 10-12% rating their problems as disabling or severe.
Over the last half a century there have been more than 80 papers published on the long- term prognosis of whiplash trauma. From these studies, 35% of those patients on follow-up in the mixed group studies, were still symptomatic, while in the rear impact only groups its greater than 50%.
